![]() No dancers, fog machines or lasers needed. It was basically a tutorial to show the audience how a song is constructed. ![]() Then, as he played, each band instrument was rolled in behind him. For example, for one tour he opened with just him and an acoustic guitar, under a single white light. He incorporated these ideas into the Talking Heads’ live performances. This was inspired by traditional music from Bali and Japan, where he noted that even though the songs were centuries old and everybody knew them, they could still deeply engage audiences through performance. ![]() He learned, for example, about the importance of the visual element in live performance while not trying to hide how the sausage is made from the audience. And so it was for David Byrne, who uses his professional career as a backdrop, a context for all kinds of tangential stuff he’s learned along the way. ![]() Along the way, we organically accumulate a great deal of information that wouldn’t have seemed relevant at the start. What it is about is something all of us home recordists can relate to: the personal journey of musical and technological exploration. ![]()
